blog Are Apple Macs Coming of Age for Business Use?

Over the years I have run some diverse businesses, from training through to manufacturing and we have always used PCs. Recently my head was turned somewhat by a business friend who is a fan of the Apple Mac, and who uses an Apple laptop every day. When he first told me about his new computer I must admit I laughed a bit. Being a die hard PC fan I believed that only “creative types” used Macs to design newsletters and edit rich media such as video, neither of which I needed in my “real” business that made things.

So it was interesting when I met my friend for a meeting the other day and he produced this rather splendid looking Apple Mac laptop and started to make notes from our meeting. The first thing that struck me was the very flash user interface and animated icons that whizzed around the screen. Although all well and good I asked what benefit it was for productivity, and he said he thought it more innovative than a PC interface such as Windows.

I then started going on about Microsoft Office and how I had been brought up on Office and didn’t want to change to a new set of software. He then showed me a very neat feature on his Apple Mac that enables him to run Microsoft Windows software on his Mac as if it was a normal Windows PC. I was very impressed.

So where are we going with this blog?

We have been very PC centric at the BITG because that is what most people we know use in business. This view is now starting to change as more and more people start to use Apple Macs to run their businesses.

Mac users say their computers are easier to setup and use than PCs. There also seems to be fewer viruses and other “malware” out there to target the Apple Mac platform, which has to be good. In fact we cover PC malware issues in the Business IT Guide here:

Computer viruses and malware

My question to you is, should we be covering the Apple Mac a bit more in the Business IT Guide as it now seems to becoming part of mainstream business computing? Please let the Guide team know your thoughts either way.
