news BeCrypt says full disk encryption should be a legal requirement

BeCrypt, a supplier of data security technology to the UK's public sector, has taken the interesting stance of saying that full disk encryption - for all private and public sector bodies - should be a legal requirement where customer or employee data is involved.

Whilst the spate of data loss incidents that have hit the news in recent months were the result of human error, Marc Hocking, BeCrypt's chief technology officer, says that, had the correct data encryption technology been in place, the data losses would not have occurred.

BeCrypt, of course, is making these comments to promote its Trusted Client technology, but is offering a white paper on data handling for free if you contact Andreina West at andreina@pra-ltd.co.uk.

We could also point out that there is a wealth of freeware that offers a similar, if rather basic, service to Becrypt.

A quick trawl of Download.com revealed there were 198 such freeware packages available.
